In a continuum of human to machine, we could posit the following:
The Robot
Robots constitute a category of both utopian and dystopian fantastical dreaming. The robot is the paradigmatic sci-fi Other. It (often, but not always a 'he') is either for or against us, but it is not us. 'He' is inscrutable - a slave or a murderer. He is a stand-in for all that we do that we do not know. We do not fully understand why we do certain things, and robots are the embodiment of these uncertainties.
