From "The Language of New Media"

In Lev Manovich's book he gives us the binary opposites in new media of the narrative turn in computer related aesthetics, and the database turn, saying these two forms are in constant opposition.

He then goes on to use these categories on the work of computer-based filmmaker John Whitney, saying he replaced traditional narrative-based cinema with a compendium (or database) of geometrically inspired and computer generated forms.

How can this be extended to other art forms as well? Should it? Am I, when not involved in making a 'database' of images, always otherwise involved in constructing narrative?
